You've reminded me of an experience from my Intentional Community days; at one of them we had a Food Steward. This person was responsible for balancing the desires of vegans, lacto-ovo vegetarians, and carnivores in communal meals, and might as well been titled Food Scapegoat. Now since this job also involved sourcing food, making menus, and assigning cooking and cleanup duties, it was pretty much a full time job and so the Steward had no physical tasks. So it came to pass that someone else wanted the job, lobbied for it, and was elected at the annual meeting. After a few months, the community was in an uproar, the new Steward resigned in disgust, and Susan was put back in by consensus. Now that I think about it, Susan was a real empath; aside from good organizational skills I think the keys to her sucess were allowing people to speak their grievances without being defensive, and the humility to make apologies when appropriate.
So advice to Futilitist: at least in Susan's case, humility and empathy were among the qualities that did indeed lead to her having far greater respect in the community.

I'd also like to echo Monsta's comments about attracting more educated folks here. I've got two Master's degrees and am employed as a Hydrologist, so I certainly fit that bill. But now I'm looking for the exits. I hear a lot of talk about having a high level discussion, but I don't see it here. I've tried myself to make respectful, thoughtful, on-topic posts but the discussions get hi-jacked or split or fizzle. Oh well. I tried.
I'm not gone yet. But if my posts get few and far between and then disappear, you'll know why.
This is the second time you have keyboarded out this complaint. The board is what you make it to be. I went and checked the commentary on my "For Whom the Bell Tolls" thread, you didn't drop in there. I'm always looking to chat up the articles on the Blog, not just my own either. You also could start more of your own threads, or start a Newz Channel like Joe and Agelbert and GO.
Or go into the archives and look for some of the longer threads, the Hyperinflation one is very long. You can start the conversation again with some New Insights you have. If you are smart you should be able to find something to say I am sure.
Anyhow, as WHD said, you haven't made many posts or been here very long, so if you disappear you won't be missed much. The Diner however can be an interesting place if you put some effort into it.

Indeed, it is sort of like the Stockade, where the offending member of the group is held up as an example of what NOT to do.
Anyhow, he's a persistent bugger, I'll give him that. I took the advice of some of the other members here and set his posts for moderation before they go up, so I can do them all in one Copy/Paste at the end of the day rather than having to do this over and over again while he is posting. Too time consuming.

F-bomb's posts may be exiled, but they are still readable, yes, and he is still free to speak, yes? That is a far cry from the absolutism of a ban, or censorship.
This is the FUNDAMENTAL DIFFERENCE between Banning and Censorship and the sort of Creative Imprisonment I came up with to resolve this problem.
If I BANNED F-Bomb, he would NEVER again have the CHANCE at Rehabbing Himself and becoming a MENSCH. Banning is like Capital Punishment, once DEAD, you cannot be returned to the Living even if you are proved Innocent at some Future Date.
Similarly, if I simply Nixed all his Posts in Moderation, Diners would not be able to check out if I was being very fair or valid in the Moderation. By RECORDING all his Posts in the Solitary Thread, all Diners can go check them out anytime they like. They are not Censored in any way, I just Copy/Paste them as they come in.
Go check out the Solitary Post. So far, F-Bomb has not added any Content to Topic at all, it is all just more Provocation to Napalm, more Ad Hom etc.
I HAVE NOT Censored or Banned F-Bomb. I just Isolated him so he cannot monopolize the board and fill the Last 100 with All F-Bomb All the Time. He is as FREE as any other Diner to post to topic and if he does, his Post will go UP on the forum just like any other diner. Just as of now he has not shown himself to be Trustworthy enough to allow his posts to go up immediately, that is why he gets the Diner Prisoner Designation. I had to create a whole new Group for this purpose on the Diner. He is currently the Only Prisoner in the Diner, a Designation I am sure he loves with his Martyr Complex.
Maybe he will eventually get the idea this is a COMMUNITY and requires a certain amount of Decorum and RESPECT of other Diners to post up. I hope so, he is a bright guy but just a very self-centered one at the moment.
